How this filter works:

On the first level, there is a neutral, large, polypropylene filter of 10 microns, that effectively filters out all small particles, unused fish food particles, dirt and dust, and even iron that has oxidized in the fish tank.

The cartridge is easy to open out by hand, washed under regular tap water, and fitted back.

On the next level, water is treated with KDFⓇ media, which works in the reduction oxidation principle, removing nitrites, nitrates and a host of other harmful components from the water.

Employing the electro-chemical oxidation process called "redox" (short for Oxidation-Reduction), KDFⓇ media consists of a zinc-copper alloy.

This alloy has the capability to eliminate 99.9% of various substances, including free chlorine, heavy metals, nitrates, nitrites, silver, aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, copper, iron, nickel, zinc, lead, chromium, barium, hydrogen sulfide, radon, selenium, trihalomethanes, manganese, mercury, chloroform, trichloroethane, lindane, pesticides, fungicides, as well as undesirable tastes and odors.

This is a very long lasting media, which does not degenerate. After 6 to 8 months, all you need to do is to fix the filter in reverse, and use it a couple of times this way, before getting a new KDFⓇ  filter.

Cartridges generally run for 6 to 8 months. It is advisable that you wash off the cartridge every few days under plain tap water, so that there is no organic accumulation and no ammonia production from the same.
