A WASH project is a development or humanitarian initiative focused on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Its goal is to improve public health, reduce waterborne diseases and enhance quality of life by ensuring people have access to safe water, proper sanitation and good hygiene practices.

Ira Waters Pvt. Ltd. has been part of the WASH initiative for years, supplying and installing drinking water filters in schools across West Bengal under the supervision of Rotary clubs and under corporate CSR programmes. We understand how a club project actually runs — the site visit, the committee approval, the budget that has to hold, the inauguration date that cannot move, and the question that matters most: will it still be working in three years?

That last question is why every system we install is built for do-it-yourself maintenance. A school WASH installation fails when the cartridge change needs a technician who never comes. Ours does not.

Where We Have Already Installed WASH Water Filters

Last updated: 19 August 2026

Parashu® drinking water filters have been installed in schools under the supervision of the Rotary Club of Kolkata and the Rotary Club of Belur, and as part of CSR projects by companies including Mitsubishi Power.

  Club-led projects

We have worked directly with Rotary project committees — from the first school visit through to the inauguration — and we understand how club procurement, budgeting and reporting work.

  Corporate CSR

Installations delivered under CSR programmes require invoicing, photographs and utilisation records in a specific form. We supply these as standard.

  Beyond the metro

Our school installations run from central Kolkata out to Hooghly, Murshidabad, Purba and Paschim Midnapore and North 24 Parganas — rural sites, not just easy ones.

Drinking Water Filters for WASH Projects

The right system for a school depends on how many students it serves, whether there is an existing water cooler or drinking water station, and what the source water is like. All six systems below are non-RO by default: they remove sediment, iron, chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria, viruses and other microbes, while retaining the natural minerals in the water and producing no reject water.

Parashu® drinking water filter systems used in WASH projects, with indicative prices
System Best suited to Indicative price
Parashu® Ultra Secure Drinking Water Purifier Three-stage, 180 LPH. Higher throughput for mid-sized schools with a fixed break time rush. ₹ 10,974
Parashu® Heavy Duty Water Cooler Commercial Filter System (500 LPH) Schools that already have a water cooler or multi-tap station. Wall mounted, failsafe. ₹ 28,910
Parashu® Heavy Duty Drinking Water System — Ultrafiltration with Automatic Backwash + UV (1000 LPH) Flagship club projects, large campuses and community drinking water points. Self-cleaning. ₹ 77,054

Prices are indicative, per unit, and exclusive of installation, pipework and taxes. Final quotation follows the site survey. Where a club is funding several schools in one grant, please ask us for a project rate.

Which System Does Our School Need?

This is the first question every project committee asks, and it is easier to answer than it looks. Drinking water demand in a school is concentrated into a few short windows — the morning assembly, the tiffin break, the end of the day — so what matters is not the daily total but whether the system can refill fast enough between those rushes.

Student headcount Indicative system
150 – 300 Parashu® Ultra Secure Drinking Water Purifier (180 LPH)
300 – 800 Heavy Duty Water Cooler Commercial Filter System (500 LPH)
1,500+ or multi-block campus Heavy Duty Drinking Water System — Ultrafiltration with Automatic Backwash + UV (1000 LPH)

These bands are a planning guide only. Actual sizing depends on source water quality, storage capacity, the number of drinking points and the school's timetable. We confirm the specification during the site survey before the club commits any funds.

Add Rainwater Harvesting to Widen the Project

A rainwater harvesting project, coupled with a WASH project, greatly improves the appeal and scope of the entire project.

We also build and implement small and large rainwater harvesting projects in schools at minimum extra cost. We generally use media filters to purify the harvested rainwater, and we take advantage of existing structures and catchments to keep costs down — most school buildings already have the roof area, the downpipes and often a disused tank that can be brought back into service.

For a club, this matters for a practical reason beyond the water itself. A drinking water filter is a single deliverable. A drinking water filter plus a rainwater harvesting system is a visible, teachable installation that the school can build a hygiene and conservation programme around, and that reads far better in a project report and at district level.

All rainwater harvesting projects are undertaken only after a feasibility assessment of the site. Where the catchment or the ground conditions do not justify it, we will tell you so rather than sell you one.

How a Club WASH Project Runs With Us

Initial conversation

Tell us the school, the approximate student strength and the budget the club has in mind. Often that is enough for us to indicate a system and a figure the committee can work with, before anyone visits anything.

Free site survey and water assessment

We visit the school, look at the source water, the storage, the plumbing and the place where students actually collect water, and assess feasibility — including for rainwater harvesting if the club wants it in scope. There is no charge for this.

Written specification and quotation

You receive a specification and a firm quotation in a form your project committee can put to a vote, and that a sponsoring company can put through its CSR approval.

Supply, installation and commissioning

We install and commission the system, scheduling the work around holidays or weekends where the school asks. Installations are photographed as they are completed.

Handover and staff training

We show the school's own staff how to change a cartridge and how to spot when it is due. This takes minutes, needs no tools, and is the single thing that determines whether the installation survives.

Ongoing support

Replacement cartridges are inexpensive and freely available from us. An annual maintenance contract is available where a club prefers to fund one, but it is optional by design, not by omission.

Why Non-RO Systems Suit School WASH Projects

Reverse osmosis is the default assumption in most drinking water conversations, and for a school WASH project it is often the wrong one. Three reasons:

  1. Reject water. An RO system discards a substantial share of the water it treats. In a school on an intermittent municipal supply or a single borewell, that waste is a real operational problem.
  2. Minerals. RO strips the natural minerals from water along with the contaminants. Our ultrafiltration and UV systems remove germs, sediment, iron, chlorine and heavy metals while leaving the mineral content intact.
  3. Running cost and dependence. RO membranes and pumps mean recurring cost and a service dependency. Our systems are do-it-yourself throughout, which is what keeps them running after the club has moved on to its next project.

Where the source water genuinely has high dissolved solids, an RO stage is the correct answer and we will specify one after testing. That is a decision for the water report, not the brochure.

Clubs and Districts We Serve

We work with Rotary clubs, Lions clubs, NGOs and corporate CSR teams across Kolkata, Howrah and the surrounding districts of West Bengal. Our school installations already run well beyond the metro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a WASH project?
A WASH project is a development or humanitarian initiative focused on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Its goal is to improve public health, reduce waterborne diseases and enhance quality of life by ensuring people have access to safe water, proper sanitation and good hygiene practices.
Which water filter should a club choose for a school WASH project?
The choice depends on student headcount and on how the water will be drawn. Small schools of up to about 150 students are usually served by a single Parashu® Versatile with Alfa UV or a Parashu® Elegant. Schools of 300 to 800 students are typically served by the 500 LPH commercial system, and larger campuses by the 1000 LPH system. Final sizing is confirmed during the site survey, which is free.
Do you supply and install water filters for Rotary and Lions club projects in Kolkata and Howrah?
Yes. We have supplied and installed drinking water filters in schools under the supervision of Rotary Club of Kolkata and Rotary Club of Belur, and under CSR projects by companies including Mitsubishi Power. We work across Kolkata, Howrah and the surrounding districts of West Bengal.
Are these filters RO systems?
The systems used in our WASH installations are non-RO by default. They use sediment filtration, activated carbon, ultrafiltration and UV treatment, which removes germs and contaminants while retaining the natural minerals in the water. Non-RO systems also produce no reject water, which matters where supply is limited. Where the source water has high dissolved solids, an RO stage can be specified after water testing.
Can a school maintain the filter itself after handover?
Yes. Our systems are built for do-it-yourself maintenance, which is the single biggest factor in whether a school WASH installation is still running three years later. Cartridge changes need no tools and no technician visit, and replacement cartridges are inexpensive and freely available. We train the school staff at handover, and an annual maintenance contract is available if the club prefers to fund one.
Can rainwater harvesting be added to a WASH project?
Yes. We build and implement small and large rainwater harvesting projects in schools at minimum extra cost, generally using media filters to purify the harvested rainwater. We take advantage of existing structures and catchments to reduce costs. A rainwater harvesting project coupled with a WASH project greatly improves the appeal and scope of the entire project. All rainwater harvesting projects are done after a feasibility assessment of the site.
What documentation do you provide for club and CSR reporting?
We provide a written site assessment before the project, a specification and quotation for the club's project committee, GST invoicing in the name of the club or the sponsoring body as required, and installation photographs at handover. These are the documents clubs generally need for project reporting and for CSR utilisation records.
How long does a school installation take?
A single wall-mounted unit is usually commissioned within a day of delivery. Larger commercial systems, and installations involving new pipework to a drinking water station, take longer and are scheduled around school holidays or weekends so that classes are not disturbed. The site survey gives you a firm schedule before the club commits.
